The Challenge:
A leading global mining group that focuses on finding, mining, and processing the Earth's mineral resources in Utah was in the midst of construction of their plant that will recover tellurium. Tellurium, a brittle, rare, silver-white metalloid, is used in a variety of industries, including solar panel manufacturing. After evaluating several materials for cost and performance to be used at the new plant, the industrial fabricator needed a unique grade of stainless steel…and needed it fast!
The Solution:
The Sandmeyer Steel experts began the conversation with the fabricator, and after considering several options of different materials, the choice was clear: SSC-6MO. Not a widely-stocked grade, this 6% molybdenum super austenitic stainless steel has excellent toughness, high strength, outstanding corrosion resistance, good weldability, and excellent formability. The end user needed long life and low-cost materials. Using SSC-6MO would allow them to reduce their thickness to .250 due to higher yield properties versus 904L or 317L. Sandmeyer Steel Company had deep inventory of SSC-6MO on location with a quick-turn promise.
The Result:
On-time delivery for the fabricator to the new plant site. By providing the most technologically advanced machinery to recover these essential minerals, Sandmeyer Steel Company is now participating in the transition to renewable energy. As one of only two smelters at this mine capable of producing copper and other crucial minerals, this new equipment is a significant contribution to vital mineral independence and energy security in the United States.
