Nickel Alloy Plate

Alloy C276 Nickel Alloy Plate: Oil and Gas Production

Sour gas is natural gas that contains large amounts of hydrogen sulfide. Natural gas is considered sour if there are more than 5.7 milligrams of hydrogen sulfide per cubic meter of natural gas. Natural gas fields that are expected to be used as energy are becoming increasingly sour. Hydrogen sulfide is corrosive, toxic, and lethal, therefore certain materials must be used to ensure safety when compressing gas that contains hydrogen sulfide. C276 (c-276) nickel alloy is a wise choice for sour gas service components because of its ability to resist corrosion, and subsequently, promote the future of the oil and gas industry. Hydrogen sulfide is especially corrosive when it is present in water. This causes sulfide stress cracking which can significantly damage equipment. Compressors for sour gas services must be able to resist corrosion in order to keep up with the demand for natural gas as a source of energy. The removal of hydrogen sulfide in oil refineries or natural gas production plants is referred to as "sweetening," and must be done before the raw natural gas can be used. The properties of nickel alloy C276 (c-276) make it resistant to sour environments, even at high temperatures.

C276 Nickel Alloy Properties

Along with hydrogen sulfides, carbon dioxide and chlorides are often found in sour natural gas. Nickel alloy C276 (c-276) plate, pipe, and sheet materials are proven to resist the corrosive effects of natural gas environments. Carbon and alloy steels cannot withstand this type of corrosive environment, making alloy C276 (c-276) an excellent choice for oil and gas production equipment. Nickel alloy C276 (c-276) can also withstand stress corrosion cracking that carbon and alloy steels cannot. The combination of nickel, chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten makes C276 (c-276) one of the most universally corrosion resistant materials available today. This chemical composition allows this material to retain its structural integrity while resisting chloride stress corrosion, cracking, pitting, crevice corrosion, or general corrosion. Also, nickel alloy C276 (c-276) can operate in oxidizing atmospheres up to 1900¡ãF. This alloy is an ideal material for oil and gas production systems because it can be easily welded and processed utilizing standard shop fabrication processes. It can be hot and cold formed, and be readily welded by most standard processes without the need for a post-weld heat treatment. Furthermore, alloy C276 (c-276) is machinable in the annealed condition, can be hardened by cold working, and cannot be hardened by heat treatment.
