Stainless Steel Plate

Alloy 347 Stainless Steel in Petroleum Refining

In the petroleum refining industry, a growing emphasis is being placed on high-alloy, corrosion resistant stainless steels to cope with a wide variety of raw crudes. Corrosives found in many refining processes include, but are not limited to: sulfur, naphthenic acid, polythionic acid, chlorides, carbon dioxide, ammonia, cyanides, and phenols. Stainless steel materials can be used in many petroleum refining applications, such as fluid catalytic cracking units and polythionic acid service. In fluid catalytic cracking units, virgin and cracked gas oil fractions from crude distillation are processed to produce motor fuel blending stocks and petrochemical feedstocks.

Types 304, 321, and 347 stainless steel are most commonly used in petroleum refining including fluid catalytic cracking units. They are also utilized in refineries for high pressure heaters and heater tube supports. These austenitic grades of stainless steel have excellent high-temperature strength characteristics and are resistant to oxidation and sulfidation. However, 304 stainless steel is susceptible to grain boundary chromium carbide precipitation “sensitization” when heated in the range of 800¡ãF to 1500¡ãF. Consequently, where “sensitization” is to be avoided, refineries prefer to use stabilized grades, such as type 321 stainless steel which is stabilized with titanium or 347 stainless steel, which is stabilized with columbium.
